Why we had an interest in Story Time Felts?
My daughter and I have been going to story time at our local library since she was about 6 months old... she's now 2. One of our favorite features of story time is the felt board and hand puppets. Even from early on she was able to focus on the colors and learn some of her very early language skills from listening to the nursery rhymes which were acted out in these felt board stories and puppet shows.
In the past we have looked into maybe purchasing some felt board characters and a felt board at one of our educational supply stores, but to be honest... we didn't due to the fact that this this store caters primarily to educators like preschool teachers and school teachers and these items were quite pricey.
When we were asked if we would try out some Story Time Felts for Penny Pinching Parent, I was pretty excited. Not just because I knew how much my daughter loves this sort of story telling activity and we would be getting to try these out for free, but because before I agreed to the review I spend some time on the Story Time Felt site checking the items out that they had to offer.... they were like what we had seen at the educational supply store, but only much more budget friendly. I had to see how these more budget friendly priced versions stacked-up to the felt items we had seen in the store.
What does the Penny Pinching Parent family think?
Right away my daughter took to these... I think any kid would. They have bright colors and are traditional prints so the characters or animals are easily recognizable. We act out Old MacDonald and several other little stories several times a week. As a mom I was impressed with the overall quality of the felt and the size of the items. I was expecting less since these are less expensive than what you get at the educational supply store, but I was very pleasantly surprised.
I love the fact that each item can be purchased pre-cut or un-cut. Not only does this allow you to save a little money, by selecting an un-cut set, but like with these mitts it also gives you flexibility. Instead of making mitts out of these felt pieces you could stuff the pieces with beans or rice and close the ends and have bean bags instead of puppets. You could use fiberfill and have a set of stuffed farm friends... you have quite a bit of flexibility. Oh and I can't fib, I can't take credit for these super cute ideas for the other ways to use these mitts, I found them when looking in the Story Time Felts catalog or online on their site.
I will also be sharing a review of one of their felt board type sets, The Three Little Kittens in a few days and I have to say that based on these two products I am so impressed. It is so nice to stumble across quality educational materials that are fun and that my child enjoys, but that are also budget friendly. As a mom who wants quality educational items for my child I have found that sometimes those items aren't priced towards families, they are geared more towards budgets of educators or schools. It's understandable, those items are built to last, thus the reason I have enjoyed the Story Time Felts, I love being able to get the educator type quality items for a more "penny pinching" price.
